Sorry, I thought of this AFTER I already posted my "Naomi pronunciation" question.
How do you pronounce Carolina? Caro-LEE-na or Caro-LIE-na? Is this also a matter of personal preference?

I say care-oh-LIE-nah, but I actually prefer kahr-oh-LEE-nah.

When I see the name, I automatically prn it caro-LEE-nah because I live in North Carolina, haha. And I just assume that most people wouldn't name their daughter caro-LIE-nah since it's the name of the state. Plus, I have never actually met a person named Carolina who pronounces it caro-LIE-nah.

As a name, I usually prononce Carolina as kar-oh-LEE-na. Every Carolina I know is a Spanish-speaker and wants it pronounced this way. For the states, I say kair-oh-LYE-na, of course. I think it could go either way. You would just have to make your preference known.

Caro-LEE-na is how I say it when it's attached to a human. Caro-LIE-na, only if it has North or South in front of it. (I'm a Yank, if that makes any difference)

People from non-English speaking coutries seem to prefer this pronounciation. :D I don't personally care for kah-raw-LIE-nah - kah-raw-LEE-nah is much clearer and funnier to pronounce.

It's personal preference and regional differences, I think. Carolina likely falls in with Elmira, Elvira, Maria, Sophia, etc--that the correct pronunciation used to be LIE-nah, but since the Latin pronunciations have become more known, the general consensus has changed or is changing. Someone else may feel free to correct me, though.
I prefer Carolina pronounced like the state.
