I really don't like Burt, and yeh, I can only think of Burton as a full form. It reminds me of Burt Reynolds.
I'd assume it was a respelling of Bert but in Scotland, Bert is pronounced with an "eh" sound - Behrt - and they're different anyway. I suppose it could be short for anything Bert is, like Albert, Gilbert, Cuthbert (which I really like).
