I'm from California, and around here, it'd probably be pronounced Helen-a, but I'd pronounce it Elaina.. It's just how I am, I try to say the proper pronunciations.

I pronounce it like Helen with an 'a' on the end, so HEL-en-a. But that's only because I have an aunt called Helen, so I'm used to that pronunciation. I do like Hel-EE-na, but I just can't make myself say it.Georgia

I actually like and pronounce it both HEL-ehn-uh and heh-LAY-nuh, but at the moment, I find myself prefering HEL-ehn-nuh. Either way, it's one of my absolute favourites. I'm from Oklahoma.~*|Bethany|*~

I would say, "helen + a." As in Helena Bonham-Carter and the capital of Montana. I live in the U.S.

I live in the north of England, and at first glance would probably say HELEN-a because I know of two girls who pronounce their name that way, but no he-LAY-nas. However, i personally prefer the pronunciation he-LAY-na.

HELEN-ahWell, as this pronounciation question keeps popping up for Helena, it seems every few weeks at the moment, and I don't think there really is a majority, just very divided opinions. If there is a majority I have a feeling it's he-LAY-na.I would instictively pronounce it HELEN-a, unless I was corrected. It's like Helen with "ah" sound at the end.I'm in Australia.

Well, I'm Catalan, and here it is pronunced uh-LEH-nuh, as -h- does not sound in Catalan. I think Helena it's a really pretty name! I love Lena (LEH-nuh), too.

is that the same as elena? My mom's from Spain- and I read that Helena translates to Ileana in Spanish- I prefer for her name NOT to be Elena in Spanish ... what do you think?(I'm not asking my mom since I don't want to involve her in our naming process)

Well, let's see.
In Catalan, the name can be written both Helena or Elena, although most people see Helena as the most Catalan one. They sound the same in Catalan, but in Spanish Elena is pronunced with the Spanish "e"...the [e] sound in the phonetic alphabet?
And I don't think Ileana is the Spanish form of Helena, at all. If you look at the link for Ileana, it says it's the Romanian form of Helen. And well, Helena is one of the forms for the Spanish Elena, but if you're in an anglo-saxon country, I doubt you'll be using the pronunciation I said, or will you? (And, btw, I agree with you: I'll never tell my family what I'm going to name my kids until they're born. I tried to comment on one of my favourite names with them once and both my mom and my sister could only say bad things about it! Aarrgghh! HA! As if I were to care! :-P)
