[Opinions] Coraline and a sort-of-celeb baby (longish)
This semester at uni I'm taking a paper on contemporary horror, and one of the books we were assigned is 'Coraline' by Neil Gaiman. I loved the book, especially the main character, because she's so spunky, and as a result I now really like the name. My only 'problem' I guess is the pronunciation. I've never heard the name anywhere else and it's not on the database. In the book other characters keep calling Coraline Caroline, so my guess is that it's meant to be pronounced kor-a-line, but I much prefer kor-a-leen (that's how I kept saying it in my head when I read the book). Has anyone else read the book? Has anyone ever met a Coraline? Does anyone like the name? What's your opinion on pronunciation?
And now the sort-of-celeb baby name. In New Zealand our sportspeople are pretty much up there with the famous actors and musicians as celebrities, and recently one of the biggest sporting couples (Adine and Jeff Wilson; she was until recently captain of the national netball team, and he's represented New Zealand in both rugby and cricket) had a baby boy. They named him Harper William. I'm not usually a fan of Harper, particularly on boys, but Harper was the Adine's maiden name (she was well-known as Adine Harper before she got married), so I think it's really cool that they named their son that. WDYT? (Also, what's everyone's opinion on the name Adine? It's another one I haven't heard anywhere else, and I really quite like it, much more than Nadine!)

You're right, it is cor-a-line(m)
In 7th grade, we listened to it on tape, with the author reading it and that's how he pronounced it. I liked the book, but most names ending in -line aren't my style.

Thanks :-)
Haven't read the book or encountered this name before, but I too instantly read it as "kor-a-leen," which I MUCH prefer to "kor-a-line." I kind of like this name. It reminds me of coral.
As for Harper on a boy...well, it's a little too feminine for my taste but in this instance I like it because of the family connection. I am neutral on Adine.
