When Derek's childhood friend Monica made up her will, she asked if Derek and Leah would be willing to take custody of her daughters if anything were to happen to her. Their father was no longer in the picture, and no one else in her family was capable of taking care of the children. Both Derek and Leah agreed, but hoped that these arrangements would never have to be carried out. Sadly, years later cancer claimed Monica's life, and to honor her wishes, Derek and Leah took over legal guardianship of the girls, making them a part of their family.
