Alex sounds stronger and Allie sounds softer. I suppose it depends on the personality of the person carrying the name.
As for me, out of these two I prefer Alex, and like it for both males and females.
However, my favorite nickname for Alexandra is Lexie, which sounds both strong and feminine.
