[Opinions] Re: Lakeisha
in reply to a message by Nikki
Lakeisha is an African-American name here in the U.S. As such, I would say that it can't even really be judged by Europeans or European-Americans. African-Americans have their own naming tastes and styles, unique to them. They have a completely different naming culture, and the names they use almost always sound unattractive to whites. These names are usually ones that whites would never consider using. I really feel that Europeans or European-Americans shouldn't even attempt to judge such names, because they're not part of their culture, and they can't judge them fairly. For instance, my ex-boyfriend is African-American. His cousin has nine children. Their names:Lamar
Lamont
LaPortia
Lakeisha--there it is
Jazzmone
Bre'onna
Borshay
Aces
AriesI did post about Aces and Aries, and of course, no one liked Aces, though a couple of people did say they liked Aries. I haven't posted about the others. There's no point, because almost all white people will say they're terrible. But to African-Americans, they're a source of cultural pride. I just don't think they can be judged in the way other names can be judged.

I agreeI'm white, but it bothers me when we label African American names trashy on the whole. I may not prefer them, but I think judging them from a white cultural standpoint is a bit disingenuous.
