I think the meaning of the word caillou in French is closer to English "pebble" than "stone".
I have been told that in France itself most people interpret the cartoon character's name as being a nickname, sort of like the phrase "chip off the old block" in American English, and think the idea of using it as an actual given name is very odd. :)
