I'm not really a fan of the name, but if I met a sweet little girl with the name, it would probably grow on me. I like the idea of using it as a nickname for either Elizabeth or Bernadette so that she would have the option of using a more formal name later on.

I like it, although I too prefer Betsy, as others have stated. I like it only as a nickname for Elizabeth, not as a name in its own right. My daughter is considering Elizabeth nn Bette for a possible future daughter. I prefer the Bette spelling.

I think the name is cute and sweet, especially for a little girl. She would definitely stand out among the dozens of Maddies, Izzys, and Caitlyns.

Betty as a NN for Bernadette is brilliant (whoa, alliteration). I like Betty, and I think it's due for a comeback.

Bernadette nn Bettie is a favourite of mine. I prefer the -ie spelling for a reason so unfathomably geeky that I really shouldn't even bring it up--and also because I prefer the look of Bettie to Betty. I also have a soft spot for Bettye, as in the singer Bettye LaVette.

But I would only like either Betty or Betsy as a nn to Elisabeth/Elizabeth. I generally dislike nn as full names. Plus an Elisabeth has a lot of options if she doesn't like her name.

She was my grandmother's sister and passed away a couple of years ago. Betty was her given name. Like you, I feel Betty works better as a nickname. I knew it was a nickname for Elizabeth, but never thought of it as a nickname for Bernadette. I think it works though.

OMG! Someone else on here actually is liking Betty. I absolutely love the name Betty. Personally I like it on its own rather than a nn for Elizabeth or something. My grandmothers name is Betty Jean and I love it. Plus I think it fits in with the trends of today like Chloe, Lucy, Abby, Lily, etc...
