I know a small Matthias, no nickname, and it's not too much to bear in the slightest. I've also grown very fond of Matt as of late and recommend that you read Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics and see if you start to like it more, too. ;)
That said, other nicknames:
Tai / Ty
Mess ;)
Mai / My
M_ (MJ, MK, MZ, whatever his initials are)
Anything else seems like it could be way stretching it: Mads, Max, Mitts, Mate, Micey, Mace, Craig.
Consider also the possibility of nicknames unrelated to his names arising. Spike, Ace, Buddy, Boo, Bear, Kidlet, Beans, Tex.
