[Facts] Increase
I'm curious...I'm heard of the name "Increase" being used in the 1700's. Does anyone have any idea what the name means?

Puritans had wondrous naming habits - even whole phrases, like Praisegod, were given as names. They also sometimes just opened their Bible to any random page and used the name on that page, on the assumption that God had led them there! So little girls might get named Jezebel, which you'd think any Christian parent would avoid ... as for Increase, it could be just the rather banal remark that the family had grown!

Random: Jezebel and Christian...Actually good as sib names (or husband/wife names *is thinking of her FF*...). Purely for the sounds though. And I know this isn't the right board for this. Sorry.Miranda

Could Increase mean what it says in a standard English dictionary?I'm sorry if I sound abrupt, but usually when a name comes from a particular word (like the names Increase or Justice or something like them) it means what the particular word means.Phyllis (aka Sidhe Uaine or Gaia Euphoria)

No problem at all. I just thought it was an interesting name. I just thought it was a pretty interesting word to pick out of the dictionary and use as a name...and in the 1700's no less!I'd still like to know if anybody has any information as to where the name comes from and what it means...other than the standard definition I mean.

There were no dictionaries in the eighteenth century, at least not like ours today. It is probably a wish for more than what the father had. Increased wealth, health, happiness, faith, whatever. People often gave their children names which reflected the hops they had for their children.Michelle

Pretty much the point of virtue names.

I would surmise had to do with the biblical charge to "increase and bear children," or perhaps with the notion of increasing the numbers of Christians, as the most famous bearer of the name, Increase Mather, I believe was a minister and came from a long line of Puritan ministers.
