is pronounced bree-GIH-teh in German. the g is harsh as in "garden". there's a popular women's magazine named Brigitte (for women aged 30 and older) and it's a bit dated. but yes, it does look like an alternate spelling of bridget :)

I figured that, but I don't expect the majority of Americans to pronounce it that way unfortunately.
