Joel is a great name and you don't actually hear it that often at all. My younger brothers mn is Joel.

I love Joel. Don't know why it is not popular in USA/UK etc. But then Joseph (Josef) is not popular in Sweden but Joel is (we pronounce it YO-ell here)."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

Joel is a nice name but since we'll likely use Joseph as a mn for a son, we wouldn't consider it. To me it seems like a modern version of Joseph (I'm sure that is not accurate though)... I hadn't thought of pronunciations other than the one syllable way, but after reading other posts I think I prefer yo-ELL but imagine that would be difficult to use in the US. ----Betsy-----

I personally love it. Its a nice change from Joseph and Joe. Plus I have good connections with the name. Its been on the top of my list for years.

A nice stable name. Also underused in the last few years. I'd like to see it come back. All in all, I like it.
Go on, be evil and get lazy.

I like it!
I know two Joels one is a very cute 9-year-old boy and the other is a very cute tall dark (and handsome) college student! ;)
So to me it has a very nice image!! And it fits each Joel perfectly! It's a very strong name but still has a cute soft edge! :) I love it!!

I like it too. It's not a favourite of mine, but it has a nice sound and I think it should be used more often. They will see us waving from such great heights,
'come down now,' they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,' but we'll stay...

An awesome and underused name! I like it!
And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how

This has grown on me. I used to only think of Billy Joel or a grown man, but now I can see it on a little boy thanks to a sweet little boy with Down's Syndrome that I met named Joel. :)
