Which do you prefer, Jane or Joan? And (I always feel like I have to specify this :-D), if you dislike both, which do you dislike less?
I prefer Jane to Joan, I guess I just like the long A sound more than the long O.

I think Jane is incredibly pretty and underused these days. It makes me think of Jane Eyre.

Jane is pretty too, but I love my name more. I like that I'm the only Joan I've ever met (except for my Granny and Godchild). Plus, Joanie makes an awesome nickname. I wish more people used Joan though, then maybe people would pronounce it correctly.

I love Jane. I think it's adorable, lovely, and classic.
I don't care for Joan, as it's quite dated, and just don't have the full pretty sound of Jane. They are similar in spelling, and somewhat similar in sound, but they are SO different to me.

My favorite aunt, Joan, passed away last year. So I'm biased. But I love the strength of the name Joan. The contrarian in me knows that Jane will be the more popular and so Joan needs all the support she can get. Joan makes me think of medieval England for some reason. Plus, I'm hoping the rising popularity of Jonah / Jonas might raise Joan's prospects as well.
In general, I'm more drawn to the long "a" sound than the lond "o" sound too. But I've got other, competing interests in my head when it comes to the name Joan.

I like both very much, with Jane being eternally classic and Joan being a throwback to 1930s glamour. Today, I prefer Joan; I absolutely love it.
