Both spellings are legitimate, but I much prefer Brigita. It reminds me of the book "Heidi" :)

they aren't even pronounced the same. Birgita is BEER-git-tah and Brigita is BREE-git-tah. They are usually spelled Birgitta and Brigitta. I prefer Brigitta.

I don't know which is the 'proper' spelling, but I like Birgita better
