I really love it. It's one of those few names that, even before I knew I was a name nerd, I've always loved (thanks to Matthias Ohlund playing for the Canucks :p)
I don't like Matthew for the same reason as you. I think it's possible to maintain a full name with no nns. People think it's hard, but it really isn't. Both my brother I have no nns, and his is incredibly easy to shorten (Cristian = Cris, and mine could be Shay but I hate that.) And although Matthias has three syllables which might makes some people feel it's too long and want to shorten it, it's not like they're particularly difficult syllables. They pretty much roll off the tongue, and they're fun to say.
