Alex or Xander are not names that we enjoy, not that I hate them but, not for me you know? Thanks so much for your opinions. It's a new name for us, so I had never really paid attention to people's perception of it.

I really like it in theory, but in practice on an American child he might get a lot of teasing about having a girls' name. And I think just about everyone will think it's a girl name on first glance.

I don't see why it wouldn't be doable in North America. I'd love to meet an Alexander "Sasha"! Love Sasha on a boy.

Sasha on a boy is neat. There was a boy Sasha in this week's BA's, a brother to one of the new babies.

My son's name is Sascha!!!! Just Sascha but he's named after his Great-Grandfather (DH's granddad) Aleksandr. We also live in the states (New England). I spelled it w/ a 'c' to make it a little more masculine since it's not such a common boys name in the states.

ETA: Oddly enough, one of my twins is named Cohen too and it never occured to me the connection between Sascha & Cohen (Sasha Baron Cohen the actor) until like 6 months ago when someone on BtN pointed it out lol

That said: Yes, it's realistic. With a well-known celeb with the name it's not that big of a deal. I've known a few male Sashas and I think it just depends on the area you live in. Around here a male Sasha might be look at slightly askew, in DC he'd be welcome.

Sasha is a great name for a guy, and it would definitely work in North America. My friend Alex's (Alexey) dad is Alexander nn Sasha, and though he's originally from Russia it really has no bearing on how why the nn takes. I think it's handsome, though I prefer Sascha (it's a difference in sound when said in Russian, the tranliteration is different) but in any case more and more people know about Sasha as a Russian nn for Alexander and so they probably wouldn't even hesitate when they hear it.

I do know of a boy named Sasha (and I think that's his actual name, not a nick-name). Age about 15. Lives in Alberta, Canada.

Sasha is too feminine. Imagine, poor little Sasha might now a few people with his name that are girls. He would most likely go by Alex or just Alexander any way.

If I ran across a non-Russian family in the US who had named their son Alexander and called him Sasha, I would find it a bit.. pretentious? Far-fetched? Implausible? It would seem like the parents either wanted to use Alexander but were hung up over it's popularity, or wanted to use Sasha but were hung up over how popular it is for girls.

For me, Sasha has become less of a "is this a boy's or girl's name?" and has become mostly a cat's name. I can't count the number of cats, male and female, I've met or heard of named Sasha. I even named a cat Sasha myself.

I don't like Sasha as a nickname for Alexander. I prefer Alexander, nick name Alex or Xander.

hmmmmm Sascha is a popular boys name where I live, or at least it was popular in the 80s, so it seems dated. All the Saschas I know are actually named Sascha, not Alexander.

Even though I grew up with several boys named Sascha I always preferred it on a girl (spelled Sasha), it just seems very feminine to me. I also prefer it on its own and don't really like it as just a nickname for Aleksandr or Aleksandra. You could compare it to Natasha or Sonia, both Russian nicknames but they aren't nicknamey at all so I would rather use them on their own and not as nicknames for Natalia and Sofia.

So yeah. I don't like it on a boy but I like it on a girl and it isn't nicknamey to me so I really prefer it on its own. I mean Sasha isn't short or cutesy like Alfie or Tim so it works fine on its own and if you never call him Alexander anyway, why name him Alexander ?

I like Alexander nn Sasha, but I don't think I would do it here. I have known a couple of people with female dogs named Sasha, too, so that's another negative to me too. I would only use Sasha if I had Russian heritage.

I know quite a few Saschas, though it's a full name for all of them. I've always loved the name (but I like it much better spelt Sascha). Since I don't think it sounds feminine at all, I'd say it's perfectly usable for a boy.

I love Sasha. But even though it's technically a nickname, I prefer to use it as a full name. I just think Alexander alone is so strong and handsome that it needs no nickname. I think it's perfectly usable for a boy. Just as usable as Alexis is, at least. Plus, there's Sasha Baron Cohen that makes it more usable. It's fine to me! And oh so handsome...

It's totally usable, my cousin's fiance is named Sacha. Alexander "Sasha" is very handsome and I adore Sasha for a boy.

I think it could work, and I'd rather have an Alexander nn "Sasha" than just Sasha as a full name.
