When first seeing it, I thought it was pronounced like mate.

Hey, my sister in law's name is Mayte. Her Spanish speaking family pronounces it My-te, but she prefers for her friends to pronounce it like Latte, Mah-tay. Her name is actually a combo of her mother's name Maria and her father's name Teodoro. Hope this helps a little.
