My Jpns. little sister recently had a baby girl and named her 安珠 (Anju)... It's not common in Jpns. either... Apparently, they were taking the Fr. word for Angel and Japanizing it... Someone else I know did that with Louis and named her son Rui.

Isn't this the name of a French royal family or something like that? And the 'j' is pronounced like the 'j' in Jacques.

The Fr. j sound doesn't exist in Jpns. and the Jpns. have a hard time pronouncing it, so it's more like the j in jump... However, they did take it from Fr.

It's also a video game name.
In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, it's the name of one of the townsfolk. She's this nice young woman who works at an inn. Her sidequest consists of reuniting her with her missing fiance... as the world ends. No, I really doubt anybody else besides me will ever pick up on that, but I just thought I'd throw that backstory out there (because MM is my favorite video game ever, and that story is rather iconic to the game as a whole).
That's interesting how it came about! I wonder if the game creators did the same thing or not. I rather like it and the process for Japanizing names.

I like it a lot, I find it rather sweet. What Kanji did they pick? (I used to take Japanese but I'm not good at Kanji anymore)

It's really pretty. When I speak it it feels a little too close to ajou (the sauce) for me, but maybe I'm saying it wrong, like ahn-zhoo. I do think that it's pretty though.
