[Opinions] Nettle
Met a girl called Nettle. WDYT?

Well, I enjoy Nettie...
Ouch.
Why would anyone name their kid after a nettle? That was my first thought.
My first thought was "Nettle? Like the thorn?"
wow, this is a bit of a gp fantasy name for me, ever since I read the Farseer trilogy where the main characters daughter is Nettle.
I really don't know why I like it though, since it doesn't have the nicest associations! And for me that's why it should really stay within the realms of fantasy. Naming your child after a stinging weed just doesn't work on a real child, and I can see her being teased a lot.

By coincidence, I just read Assassin's Quest, the book where this character appears, over Christmas. I wonder if the parents of this child read the book.
In the book it's explained that the positive medicinal properties of nettles are what the mother was thinking of in bestowing the name on her child, if I remember correctly. So to the mother, nettles were much more than "stinging weeds". And some varieties of nettle do have pretty flowers:

never had a professor down as the sort of person who reads fantasy novels :)
I forgot Molly's reason for using it, it's been a while since I read them. Maybe the parents did choose to use it in that sense.
Actually the wiki article for nettle makes interesting reading, I didn't know there was so many species and I think only one actually stings, unfortunately it seems to be the commomnest one in the West.
Maybe it's a shame then that any modern day, non herbalist, person will only think of the stinging nettle.

You must not know many professors! :)
The chairperson of my department is a huge Harry Potter fan.
One of the English professors at my university has been teaching a course on Tolkien for years, and he loves George R. R. Martin, as I do.
And of course most of the computer science professors I know are big fantasy and/or science fiction fans, but that sort of goes with the "geeky" territory. :)
