[Facts] The name Romilly
Hi there,
I have been doing some research On my name and came
accross your website. You are offering a great service for
parents to be, and therefore take great care that all the
information you provide is correct. On that basis I would like to
offer some advice on my namesake.
Although a feminine sounding name, Romilly is a masculine name.
The name has Latin and Romano-gypsy heritage. 'Rom' meaning man
in many gypsy languages, primarily Romanian.I was Named after
The welsh Painter Augustus John's Son Romilly John who later
became the Admiral of The Fleet in England.Augustus Had an
affair with a gypsy woman who later bared many of his children.
The Two meanings of the name that hold the most creedance are
'The Appertainer of Rome' and 'The Son Of Rome' which both
connect with The Romulus and Remus Fable; the two children
brought up by wolves that went on to build Rome.
Historically the name has always been a mans name although it
does hold its place as a French surname from the 12 century
onwards.
Other baby name sites offer unfeasable alternatives, all wholly
unsupported.Such misconceptions of the name are, 'rock of
lillies, woman of Rome, walker and wanderer'. All highly
imaginative but alas incorrect.
So although a somewhat flowery name, it is unquestionably
masculine. If parents want to call their daughters Romilly that
is entirely up to them, but to do so without fully
understandindg the name's true meaning wouldn't be a great
advertisement for all the baby name sites misconstruing the
names gender and eventually undermining the very service they offer!.
Yours honourably,
Mr Romilly Griffiths Esq.
