I was researching mythical creatures for my English project and the word Selkie kept hitting me as a name.
What do you think? Girl or boy? I personally would say girl.
What kind of person does it make you think of?
I would use it only in a story, not in real life.

I don't like it as a name. Although if it were a name, it sounds more feminine. Or maybe it's just that when I think of selkies I think of them as female. And the only kind of person it makes me think of is a selkie!

Did you create the name, or did you come across it in your research? If you came across it in your research, what culture / ethnicity does it come from? Is there a story associated with it?
I'm not drawn to the sound of "SELL-kee," and the spelling Selkie looks more like a nn than a formal one. But I could be persuaded to like it with more information. (For me, the fun of names are the associations they conjur up. Created names lack anything to hold onto.)

I thought it sounded Celtic. But now that I know for sure I can give way to its charms. "The Secret of Roan Inish" was a cute movie. Now I have a mental picture to put with Selkie. :-) Names from mythology are almost always intriguing.
That said, I would keep Selkie as a GP mn. It's nice, but as a fn it needs too much explaining. But that's just my two cents (pence?).
