I grew up with a TV series of the "Ellery Queen" mystery books. So Ellery is all male to me.
It's a bit surname-y for me, but it does have a nice sound to it. I feel the same way about Avery.
Go ahead and use it for a boy. I'm going to start a movement to "take back the name." Parents of little boys will do the fighting for me by using tradtionaly male names like these for their sons.
When will parents of little girls be sated? Why must they continually pinch boy names? When will I get a life and stop obsessing about this stuff? :-)
P.S. My parents named my sister Hilary, so that tells you how full of it I am.
