Is Skylar/Skyla a really popular name? Do you think it is going to become more or less popular? Are there any other origins/meanings other than schuyler? I think i'm very much favouring this name for a baby girl.

I quite like the name Skylar. I think it has such a nice edge to it. I almost chose it for myself, I thought I'd make a damn fine Skylar. But in the end I thought it was perhaps too trendy, so I unknowingly picked and EVEN TRENDIER name instead. go me. I like how it's one letter away from the word "skylark", so that's the sort of "meaning" I favoured.
I think this is one of my favourite "trendy popular" names. I adore it so. However, though it seems popular, it really isn't, as I've not met a single Skyler or Skylar.

It seems to have been quite trendy in the late 1990s. At least I met heaps of little Skylars and Skys back then (various spellings). Now it seems to be a bit out of fashion and it's losing popularity, that's for sure.
I like Sky and Schuyler for girls.

I hear it a lot on the babies of teenage mothers, for some reason. Frankly, I think it's a little played. There's no substance to it.

Huh.. I just searched my state's top 100, and noticed to see that my current top pick (Mariah) was #72 in my state in '07, despite being at #92 in the nation. Good to know.

Well, not popular as in "every second girl is named Skylar, and every third boy is too", but popular as in there will be other kids named Skylar at her school. Maybe not Skylur A in the front row, your Skylar B in the second, and Skyyler C in the back ... but she wouldn't be the only one. Here, anyway.

How is it getting popular? It lost 26 places (Skylar) and 58! places (Skyler) compared to last year! Schuyler isn't in the top 1000 anymore at all and neither is Skyla. I think it's one of the quickest falling names out there, it's really really out of style at the moment.
As for Sky and Skye, they are a bit more common but by no means can you call them popular (US, at least).
Neither one of them has EVER made the top 100.
All of those names peaked in the late 90s/eary 2000s. They even seem a bit dated to me already.
Schuyler might be the original spelling, but in Dutch the pronunciation doesn't even come close to Skylar or Skyler, so it's just a mispronunciation, really. I still like it best, though.
