Amy, from the Old French Amee 'beloved' from the Latin Amata, past participle of amare 'to love'.
In French, the word for 'friend' is 'ami (male)/amie (female)' so living in Canada he would probably be aware of at least the 'friend' meaning. Whether he knew the etymological meaning of 'beloved' is something you'd have to ask him.
