The -ij- in Dutch makes an ie sound as in eye, and in Afrikaans an ei sound as in place. So, ma TIES or ma TEIS, depending on where you are.

Neither of those sounds is 100% accurate, but close enough

To the best of my knowledge, it's mah-TYCE. Thijs is definitely Tyce, just guessing on the Mat (but it seems like a safe enough bet).
