Help[Opinions] Orchid
Could Orchid work as a girl's name? What are your opinions on it? Any good combos? I like the French form "orchidée" even more, but that might sound strange as a name to a French person.

Yes it's derived from testicle, but who cares? Not many people know that as far as I know. I think it's nice on a boy (might work bette ron one cause the meaning, LOL) too.

That's cool but it's nice some have now been made aware
isn't it? Obviously some do care. I like that I learn things from this board and I also share back what I little I know. Lots of meanings don't deter me but this bally one does, a lot. Not everyone is going to be swayed by the same meaning and/or associations - orchidectomy, testicles, what have you.

speaking for myself, I try to dig into the deep etymological meanings of my names; I wouldn't be satisfied knowing "orchid" referred to the plant orchid, but would try to find out where it came from.
Then again, I don't know how awful it would be to be able to go around and say "My name means balls." Could be kind of awesome.

Before reading Zuchinnis post I thought it would sound better on a boy. Ha! I hate it when a name I like has a meaning I couldn't live with...

For that reason, I'd avoid it. I don't like the sound either but the flowers sure are lovely.

I don't worry about that kind of thing. Orchid only means a type of flower in English. Only a small number of people will even know of the connection.

I don't remember that part!
It's been a while since I saw it. Google is just my friend. I look up whatever I can to make sure I haven't missed anything. Someone mentioned an orchidectomy (surgery to remove one or both testicles) once in an Orchid thread and it went from there, really ;-)

I had no idea until a few years ago and I thought it was perfectly okay then.
I don't think it renders it completely and utterly unusable but I'd not want people making the connection. Well, I'd just cringe with embarrassment, lol.

I like it. I think it could work as there are plenty of flower names that do.
