It's classic and it's clear and clean in sound. I like it very much. Historically, it wasn't used much in England until the 1950s/60s, except by Huguenots and Irish Catholics. Many Huguenot refugees had the name. I especially like it with Continental surnames.
It seems to be used more as a mn at present, and seems to be slowly making a comeback after being in the doldrums for a while.
The first Pauls I ever knew were very handsome! The first was Paul James.

Thanks for info and opinion. I hadn't really thought about it historically. It does seem to be more of a middle name at present. I hope it doesn't make too big of a comeback though.
