My great-grandmother, who I adored, had this name but she pronounced it EYE-niss. Have you ever heard of it being pronounced this way?

I love this name! It's been on my favorite name list for a long time! I love it pronounced EYE-nez. I don't like it pronounced ee-NEZ.

hee hee. That prn sounds like Anus with a southern accent.
Otherwise I think it's a pretty name. I've never heard that prn but I'm not surprised it was used.

In Spanish it's pronounced ee-NAYSS and ee-nayth in certain parts of Spain I believe. In English, in-NEZ is generally accepted, but I don't know where she got EYE from. I find it's not uncommon for older people to really change a foreign word or name to fit into their preferred English pronunciation. I think that's just what they did back then. My grandfather will say SAA-dum and O-samm-a bin-LADD-in, thing like that. I know he would pronounce Inez as EYE-nez if he saw it. That's what he does. I think that's just what they did back then -- pronounced foreign words however they wanted for the most part. (I live in the Northeastern United States, so it's not a Southern thing.)

I love Inez pronounced eye-nez. It's just really sassy (I love that word).

The only problem is the long "i" pronunciation, as your grandmother said it. Unfortunately, that's a common pronunciation here in the U.S. It's used more in the South and in rural parts of the country. I can't stand it that way.
The Spanish / French / Italian pronunciation, "ee-NESS" or even "ee-NEZ," is so much prettier. (No offense intended against your grandmother.)

No offense taken. It's good to know that it is a common pronunciation in the south since that's where she is from. I've never met another Inez... so I was unsure if she was the only one who pronounced it that way.

I like it, but I prefer Inés. That's what my parents planned to name me, actually. The only problem I have now when I see it, is that I want to pronounce it the Portuguese way, ee-NEZH, because my ex-boyfriend's sister was called Inês and I'm so used to it now. I've never heard it pronounced as EYE-niss and I'm not sure I like it that way.

I'm really not too fond of this name. But I've never heard it as "EYE-niss." I've always heard it as "ee-NEZ" or "eye-NEZ." That's cool that she pronounced it that way! I've never thought of saying it like that.
