[Opinions] Colby
There was a rather depressing news item on yahoo a few days ago involving a young girl with cancer whose name was Colby. WDYT? I really don't like it, it's very trendy and unfeminine, and doesn't have a very nice meaning either.

I really dislike the sound of the name. When I was a kid there was a character on a soap opera who named her daughter Colby after her her maiden name. Even as a kid, I thought it was really unattractive. The cheese association doesn't help me much. There was a nice good-looking guy on "Survivor" one season and I was disappointed that Colby was his name, heh.

Cheese!I can just see parent's taking a kid's picture and trying to get him to smile by saying, "Colby, Cheese!" To answer the actual question, Colby is bad on a boy, and putting it on a girl only makes it worse. The sound isn't too attractive either. The "olb" sound reminds me of the sound when someone gulps water.

That's my mother's maiden name. She wanted me to name my future daughter Colby, but I told her no; for some reason, it reminds me of an old man.

I think of the cheese. And I agree it doesn't have a very good sound.

Kolbe, a la Saint Maximilian KolbeI had a friend who was named after Saint Maximilian Kolbe, so it was spelled Kolbe. I prefer that way (only for a boy though). After you read about the saint a little more, maybe it will improve the meaning for you.

I do know about him and he's certainly a great namesake, though personally if I wanted to name a child after him I'd opt for handsome name Maximillian.
I still find Colby unattractive as such, and I doubt all children named Colby are named after Kolbe.

I don't like it at all for a girl. It's ok for a boy.

since its a place name i dont really mind it being used on either gender but i have seen this more on boys than girls. but it doesnt bother me for a girl.

WellYou know that cheese that is orange and white spotted. That's colby jack.

And just the yellow part is colby, which you can easily buy separately. The white part is monterey jack. :) Colby is a very popular sandwich cheese.
