Help[Opinions] Hyacinthus (eta: Lindy)
What are your opinions on Hyacinthus for a boy? I think I prefer what I believe is the correct Greek pronunciation, Hye-uh-KIN-thuss, rather than Hye-uh-SIN-thuss. I like both, though. Hmmmm anywho, WDYT?
And if you don't like it, are there any sound-alikes (long male names with long 'i' sounds preferably) that you like better?
ETA: Also, WDYT of Lindy as a boy's nickname? What full names could it be short for?

If I remember correctly, I think 'Υακινθος is pronounced YAH-keen-thos in Modern Greek. Hyacinthus is Latinized. Anyway, I like Hyacinthus, but I'm not wild about its English pronunciation either. I think it would be difficult to get people to pronounce it in any other way because of Hyacinth.
The only longer names I can think of with that sound are Biblical like Jeremiah, Malachi, Zachariah, Zechariah, Hananiah, Hezekiah, Jedidiah, Nehemiah, etc.

I think she means the myth of Hyacinthus and Apollo (correct me if I'm wrong). (http://www.pantheon.org/articles/h/hyacinthus.html) (http://www.theoi.com/Heros/Hyakinthos.html) However, I don't think a lot of people would know about that, and if they did, I don't think it would matter.

Hyacinthus is neat. I prefer Hye-uh-KIN-thuss, but I'd imagine that a lot of people would pronounce it Hye-uh-SIN-thuss because of Hyacinth.
I think Lindy would be okay as a boy's nickname. Linden would be a nice full name.

I like Hyacinth for a boy:-) It's a male noun in Croatian so I can't imagine it on a girl (same for flower Jasmin)

I like Lindy as a nickname for Linden. There's also Lindberg, Lindell, Linder, Lindhurst, Lindley, Lindsay (which I only like on a boy, Linford.

I like your pronunciation a lot, but I would spell it Hyakinthus or Hyakinthos or whatever best approximates the Greek name, rather than Hyacinthus. Lately I've been mad into Jacinto, but that's just by the by.
The only name that sounds like Hyacinthus to me is Hiawatha.
And Lindy is neat as a boy's nickname. I think Linden is the obvious choice--this used to be a big favorite of mine (still is, really), but I never thought of a nn for it. Lindy could also work for Lyndon, Lindall, Lindell, Lindsay/Lindsey, or Lynn.
