[Opinions] Homer?
I've been interested in the name Homer a lot lately. I love it's ties to literature, art and classicism, and also it's quiet humbleness. It gives me very much the same feeling as Amelia does - elegant in a very quiet way.
I know though that many people associate this with Homer Simpson, and the name has become synonymous with laziness, stupidity and sloppiness. Is there any hope for the rescue of Homer? What are your opinions on this name? Is it a choice that only celebrities could endow with coolness (like Richard Gere), or could common society make this name work too?

As long as his middle name isn't Jay, I would thik the laziness association would slide a bit.
I should associate the name Homer with Homer Simpson probably more than any other person on this board since I know the movie's director. Yet, I still like the name and think of the Greek poet. I also love Homeros.
I sure hope Homer can be resurrected from the Simpsons. It is such a shame that a name with so much going for it had to be ruined by a TV show.
I know a Homer
I went to high school with him and was friends with him. His name was Homer Oliver, although he was a III. So the name actually makes me think of him, and he was quiet and always reading. I do think of Homer Simpson, but I can usually brush that off and think of Homer as more academic, subdued, and yes, I suppose quietly elegant is a good way to describe it. It also makes me think of Homer the writer.

I didn't even know that was a real name!
It does sound very ancient to me, but then, it also sounds like when I try to make up my own Latin names for things. I think I might like plain old Homer better, Simpsons and all.

Actually
Homer is the adjusted version, that's why I never liked it. I don't understand why the -os / -us had to be cut off. (same with Neptune / Neptunus, Saturn / Saturnus, Herod / Herodes, what's so bad about the -us -os -es that it always has to be cut off?) I prefer original forms like Hemeros, and could live with Latinized Homerus, but Homer? No.

SCREAMS OUT SIMPSONS - SORRY!
THANK YOU FOR SHOUTING THAT!
I don't know... I'm sorry, but I immediately think of Homer Simpson.
I'm sorry, I do associate it with Homer Simpson and I think many people will. It could work as a middle name though.

I, a classics major who has never watched The Simpsons, love Homer and deem it capable of revival.
I'm not a huge fan of the name but, at first glance, I associate it more with literature than I do the Simpsons. Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of the show. I think paired with the right middle name, it could make for a wonderful combo.
