I love Cate (about a million times more than Kate, don't know why). I'd use it as a nn for Cassandra or Carlotta.

I know so many girls named Katie, Cate, Katelyn ect. Wow...it is quite generic IMO. Not that it's a bad name...just very used.

No, not too bland, I love it spelled like that too but it sometimes leads people to believe it's short for Catherine. But as a mn, I think no one would question it.

I do find it rather bland. But I would have to see which name you would be pairing it with to determine if it would make a good mn. A name makes a good mn when it works well with the fn.

I think it has a nice, crisp feel to it, especially spelled with a C. Katie is boring to me, but Cate is fresh.
