Help[Opinions] Francis
What do you think of this name for a boy - too wimpy and destined to be beaten up on the playground? Or old-school-cool? I myself can't decide. It's a name used by a lot of the men in my family in the middle.

Francis is still widely used as a fn in the U.S. (number 600 something last year), so I think it is still a safe choice.
Francis could be seen as super dorky or very cool, it all depends on where you live, the people judging the name, and who the child is. If you don't feel comfortable using it as a fn, use it as a mn. Personally, I like Francis, but I have the same worries as you and would only use it as a mn (and fully intend to, should I ever have another son). If you feel that the name sounds to feminine or what have you, I think you run the risk of your child picking up on that and not feeling completely comfortable with the name.
I know that name teasing goes on, but I seriously don't think that a child's name is the cause of teasing. Sure, if a name lends itself to easy rhymes or the like, yes, the potential for teasing is higher. Usually, though, the child being teased was being teased about something else before hand.

Hmm, I can't decide. I love the name too, being Catholic and all :) I knew two Francises growing up-one went by Francis (or Fran to close friends) and one went by Frank. The Francis I knew was a cool, popular guy but was not a jock, more of an intellectual type. That's the kind of person I see with this name. I really like it a lot!

Okay, I like it because of its established classic-ness & because of its long Catholic history. Sooo many St. Francises.
Regardless of that, the sounds "fran" and "cis" are rather mushy and...yes, feminine. I really can't go for it as a first name. Middle name, yes.

I think it's a very strong name, but that could be because I associate it with a character of mine. I think it makes an especially good middle name. My husband thinks it's wimpy on a boy. We discussed using it because my paternal grandmother's middle name was Frances and if we never had a second girl I'd want to use it still.

I would say that it depends on where you live. Personally I find it very chic, but I am sure it would be a hellish name to have in Nebraska.

I live in Winnipeg, Canada... and honestly I am not sure how it would go over here. Oddly enough it would depend on where in the city we lived when the kid was born, I think. In the posher, more sheltered neighborhoods, it would probably be fine (my friend works in a daycare in that area, and the names they give their kids is quite varied), but in others... that boy would be toast.

I really like this name but I don't think it would be easy name for a kid to have. It would be a great middle name

Catholic cool but a kid with that name would get beaten up on the playground. :p

I think it works better as a middle name. It's nice, but I think the other kids might tease him, seeing as how it's also a girls name. But you never know, they might be cool with it.
