[Facts] Return to the Swamp Planet Daivobah
in reply to a message by Nanaea
Desperately I turn to my Mentor and Guide in the ways of The Force:
Something is wrong, Master Yoda. I can feel the pull of the Dark Side, ever stronger! In my dreams I hear the rasping voice of the Emperor Palpatine whispering "It's evil but it's free, Daivi-Wan!"
Master, I fear the attraction is irresistible, especially to a seasoned Haggis Knight like myself...
Yoda only blinks and cocks his wizened head: "Ehhh. Mudhole?! Swampy?! My message board this is!"
(Pathetic old shit: off-topic as usual...)

Listen to The Dark Side, Daivi-Wan...
I am intrigued with the thought of what wonderous anagrams our somewhat reluctant Jedi Knight might produce. :)
Speaking of Jedis (Jedais? Jedii?), this weekend is the big sci-fi convention at Stony Brook University. Does your bro-in-law steer clear of the old workplace during the annual I-Con weekend? I was there last night, and the Dealers' Room *rocks* this year. Fantastic jewelry and out-of-print books and stuff. Today when we go back, I'm doin' some serious *shopping*! :D

My bro-in-law, a live ringer for the dead Elliot Abrams right down to the pipe, is a 30-year man in SUNY-SB administration. Therefore, NOTHING could keep him away from the office on weekends, assuming he's not using one of his 40 weeks of annual vacation.
But it's a sure bet you won't find him at I-Con in a Tribble suit, buying a dilithium crystal key chain and trying to peek down Nichelle's cleavage...
Hope you and John have a fun weekend!

We're having a great time! I came home to let the dogs out, and then I'm heading back to the con.
Here's something which I found amusing. A lot of the dealers' tables sell all sorts of jewelry -- including pentagrams on little silver necklace chains. But none of the dealers are selling the Satanic pentagram -- the kind with one of the arms of the 5-pointed star pointing downward. So I asked one dealer why. And she explained: "Everything I sell is connected to the Light, I won't sell anything harmful." As she was telling me this, I was examining her display of daggers, broadswords, and other sharp implements of destruction. It was quite entertaining! :)

Sorry I hadn't responded to this before today, but in some of the witches' ceremonies, swords and special daggers called athames are used, especially in Gardnerian traditions That guy had people going "sky-clad" and using flails (and he was an old fart).
By the way, the spell I cast on my feral colony claimed its first victim (tried to run one of the cats over, and his brand new car flipped over. He had to be extricated. I don't know how he's doing, since I had to go to class but he had his "ten to the tenth"!).

Hi, Phyllis. I know about athames -- and that their use is primarily symbolic. The point I was attempting to make, is that the Sigil of Baphomet pentagram is also merely a symbol. :) What's more, a pentagram is far less likely to cause physical damage to a person than a dagger or a sword when in the wrong hands.
As for the guy who tried to run over the cat and got in a car accident... Let's hope he survived. So he can have another accident. And another. And another... (One very practical reason why the vast majority of Satanists are opposed to capital punishment.)
I see you gave young Selwyn the URLs to a couple of excellent sites on Judaism. Another outstanding site to recommend is:
www.religioustolerance.org
I was halfway inclined to give that URL to the lady in the dealers' room whom I'd asked about the pentagrams. She would've done well to read the article on "Religious Satanism" and learned a few things. :)

I printed out the stuff I found on the website that you recommended and I'm going to show it to my Wicca and Neopaganism instructor tonight. I don't recall if this is one she also recommended this semester or not: if not, then she might want to take a look before recommending it to the rest of the class.
Go raibh maith agat (thanks)

An dtigann tu Gaelige? 8D I'll understand this response was "a fluke". It's just that I haven't used Gaelic on any other message boards, and had somebody respond correctly.

Wow, I just read the article on satanism. I really learned alot. Is your husband a satanist as well? At first, when I saw you post that you were a satanist, I thought you were kidding, but now I can better understand how such a nice person can be a satanist. They are not evil. I hope you don't take offense to that, Nan, I really do mean that nicely. :)

Glad you read the article, Sarahjeanne! No, I didn't take offense. I don't get offended that easily -- and certainly not by people whom I already consider to be cool, such as you. :)
My husband happens to be a Christian -- Church of England. He's cool, too. :)

I'm glad that you have a cool husband! Maybe someday I'll get one:)
Thanks, Nan. I really did learn alot from that. It's amazing what stereotypes can do to things. AND people :p

"I'm glad that you have a cool husband! Maybe someday I'll get one:)"
@@@@ You and Phyllis will both find someone cool eventually. You know that old saying, "You've got to be a friend to have a friend"? Well, it's also true that you've got to be cool to get cool. And you both are. :)
"Thanks, Nan. I really did learn alot from that. It's amazing what stereotypes can do to things. AND people :p"
@@@@ It's limited thinking that leads to stereotyping. Satanists aren't "evil" -- just "untamed". ;)

Ditto with witches and (most) neopagans. I attended a small ritual and I felt less inhibited being "sky-clad" when a number of those involved were too. Nobody cared what anybody else looked like.
Before you ask, no, the flails were left behind (it wasn't a Gardnerian ritual).

Yep, ditto with witches and most neopagans. Some neopagans are a *little* bit tamed, though. :) That whole concept of worrying over the things that you do coming back at you "threefold" doesn't exist at all in Satanism.
That's not to say that Satanists don't have ethics, of course. It's just that we feel that, as intelligent adults, we already *know* the difference between what's right and what's wrong -- and we act accordingly. We don't act (or refrain from acting) out of a fear of divine retribution.
Of course, I'm not saying that people who aren't Satanists act rightly only out of fear of divine retribution -- because Satanists obviously aren't the only people capable of acting on their conscience. I'm just saying that Satanists aren't "tamed" in any way by such religious conventions.
I know what you mean about not feeling self-conscious about being skyclad when around others who are also doing it. In my pre-married days, I used to be a regular visitor to a nude beach on Fire Island. However, I wouldn't be likely to suddenly start disrobing at a regular beach. People would think you're craaaaaaazy (or something else!) if you did that. LOL!

@@@@ I like that!! I may have to join the "dark side", I often find myself doing things I shouldn't. And I love it! :)

Last I heard, the flipped convertable victim is still in intensive care. I guess it goes to show that flipped convertables, cement/asphalt parking lots and brick buildings don't mix.
Another website you might be interested in is Holy Smoke (http://www.holysmoke.com.) True, it mainly deals with Wicca and Neopaganism, but it touches on a number of others. There's another site that I can't remember the address for right now, but I should have it by Thursday.
Also, concerning Sarahjeanne's comments about a cool husband: Ditto here.
