Trancy is my sister-in-law's name. She is in her mid-60s, and the name supposedly came out of a novel.

Sounds like a combo of
Tracy
and the word "trance". From Dictionary.com, "trance" derives from:
Middle English traunce, from Old French transe, passage, fear, vision, from transir, to die, be numb with fear.
But I could be absolutely wrong.
