Kanye West is a semi-prominent rapper in the US. But I all I know is that he's male, Black, and works in America.

Kanye's name could've been made up, but it does sound rather genuinely African to me. Sorry I can't be more helpful in that area.

His parents probably named him after the town of Kanye in Botswana. According to Adrian Room's African Placenames, the town's name means "hill of the chief" in the Tswana language.
