I love Dorothy, it's so swishy and fun and yet also medieval, and Dottie is adorable. I like Dorothy Alice, Dorothy Nell, Dorothy Louisa and Dorothy Lucilla best.

I think Dorothy is still an unfashionable old-lady name. I went to school with a Dorothy (just Dorothy, no nicknames) and she hated her name with a passion. She's in her late 20s now and I still can't imagine anyone under the age of 55 named Dorothy. I prefer Dorothea. It seems to have that old-lady cool quality to it, and even though I'm not one for nicknames, I think Thea is infinitely better than Dora, Dory, or Dot / Dottie.

Alice, Helen, Isobel, Jane, Rosabel, Viviane. When I read your "Dorothy" - Wordsmith header, I saw it as Dorothy Wordsworth at first glance, which might be why I'm going for the more retro names.
