According to Hanks & Hodges' A Dictionary of Surnames, there are two possible derivations for the English surname Arundel:
1. From a place name in Sussex, England, which possibly originally meant "horehound valley."
2. From a Norman French nickname originally meaning "little swallow" (the bird).
