[Opinions] Belgian royal family names
King Albert (full name: Albert Félix Humbert Théodore Christian Eugène Marie in French/ Albert Felix Humbert Theodoor Christiaan Eugène Marie in Dutch) and Queen Paola (Donna Paola Margherita Maria Antonia Consiglia) have three children:
>Prince Filip (French: Philippe Léopold Louis Marie, Dutch: Filip Leopold Lodewijk Maria) and Princess Mathilde Marie Christiane Ghislaine have four children:
(-they have an El-/-el theme going) * Elisabeth Thérèse Marie Hélène (25/10/2001) * Gabriël Boudewijn Karel Maria/ Gabriel Baudouin Charles Marie (20/8/2003) * Emmanuel Leopold Guillaume François Marie (4/10/2005) * Eléonore Fabiola Victoria Anne Marie (16/4/2008)
>Princess Astrid Joséphine-Charlotte Fabrizia Elisabeth Paola Marie and Archduke Lorenz Otto Carl Amadeus Thadeus Maria Pius Andreas Marcus have five children:
* Amedeo Maria Joseph Carl Pierre Filip Paola Marcus (21/2/1986) * Maria Laura Zita Beatrix Gerhard (26/8/1988) * Joachim Carl Maria Nikolaus Isabelle Marcus (9/12/1991) * Luisa Maria Anna Martine Pilar (11/10/1995) * Laetitia Maria Nora Anna Joachim Zita (23/4/2003)
>Prince Laurent Benoît Baudouin Marie and Princess Claire Louise have three children:
* Louise Sophie Mary (6/2/2004) * Nicolas Casimir Marie & Aymeric Auguste Marie (13/12/2005)
I was doing some research for a class and as a namenerd couldn't pass these without mentioning them.
And for those wondering, the family is Catholic, which is why everyone has Marie/ Maria in their name.

Elisabeth, Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eleonore as a sibset is so remarkably tasteful. It is one of the best sibsets I have ever seen, and I have been admiring it since Eleonore's birth.

Nicolas CasimirYou know being Lutheran I accept that Catholics use Maria/Marie as MNs for both genders (I live in Bavaria, it's done here too) but naming girls Gerhard & Joachim or boys Isabelle and Paola (which I guess are their godfathers' / godmothers' names) is overdoing things, IMO ;)

I agree that the gender bending with Gerhard, Joachim for girls and Isabelle and Paola for boys is odd. Besides the fact that they're family names, I wonder if the idea was to have a masculine and feminine saint name for all their children?

Yes, that's possible. But Luisa does not have a masculine given name, does she?

You were right the first time, the middle names are usually after godparents, not saints.
Generally, the only saints' female name use for boys is Mary (in all it's forms), girls do tend to get male saints in the middle name spot more often, but it's usually either a family patron saint or one of the 'big' ones (like Jose, Jesus, etc.).In this case:Amedeo Maria Joseph Carl Pierre Filip Paola Marcus -Filip Paola part is after the prince and the queen who are his godparentsMaria Laura Zita Beatrix Gerhard -her godfather is her paternal uncle Archduke Gerhard of Austria-Este
