Help[Opinions] Xynthia
This is the name that has been given to the storm that has severely hit part of France. I must be cynical, because when I saw it on the newspaper my reaction was :" why did they pick such a tacky name"? On the TV news I'd misheard it as Cynthia. I don't care much for names starting in Xi or Xy, but maybe someone likes Xynthia?

Don't they name storms in alphabetical sequences? There aren't that many X names - I thought it was quite creative for a storm, but definitely not human.

I like it, but Xanthia's a bit better. The 'Xy' bothers me a little. Too bad it's the name of a storm.

Is Xynthia a real name? It looks made-up, like someone was trying to get kre8tyv with Cynthia.

I was wondering if someone would have posted about it. I usally dislike names beginning with X but oddly enough, I don't find it that bad...
As for the origin, I have read that this name had been chosen by a German man who won in a lottery the right to name a meteorological phenomenon (names can be bought by people since 2002). He said it was just a variant of Cynthia.

We got Xynthia here right now. Or so they say, I dunno. I don't like the name.

I was just thinking about it when I saw the name on the news.
Well, in their defense, storm/hurricane names aren't just picked randomly, they have an alphabetical list they follow, depending on the strength of the storm.
As for Xynthia, I actually prefer it to Cynthia.

LOL, yeah I'm sure they had different problems.
Also, I think I read that there are different lists for different parts of the world. Maybe this is the spelling used in Spanish or Portuguese.

Yes, you are right, the names are different for different areas.
I live in east-coast Canada, and we hear a lot about storms along the Atlantic coast; happily, few of them reach us.
These are alphabetically named, and the names are alternately male and female. Or, what a non-name nerd would consider male and female!
