You're right to question it. Redfield is an alteration of Redfin (at least in the US) as you can see at http://surnames.behindthename.com/bb/view.php?id=3799080&board=sur. In other cases, the origin might be the placename Redfield in Bristol (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redfield,_Bristol) and that's nowhere near Scotland.

I have no direct evidence but it seems quite plausible that Redfin could be an alteration of Redfern whose origin you'll find at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Redfern-name-meaning.ashx
