Fido? Spot? Rex? It's a pet name only.

Me no laika ... I always think of the Russian cosmodog whose name meant Little Lemon. So, since L seems to feature, what about Laika Lucille?

Yes, the name itself sounds nice but I associate it with the Russian space dog too, and it's a rather sad story.

Yeah, it's a quintessential dog name here. Lajka/Laika for female and Rex for male dogs. Her name doesn't mean Little Lemon (where did you get that?), it means Barker (in Croatian (similar to Russian) 'lajati' means 'to bark'). Her name was originally Kudryavka (little curly one).
More about her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika Sorry, for the tangent, but we had a wonderful dog Lajka for 16 years.

Oh, doesn't it? Thanks, Sofia ... I foolishly believed what the South African newspapers told me, back in the 1950s: they gave Little Lemon as the translation, but didn't explain how they got it, and back in those Cold War days nobody would have thought of walking into a library or bookshop and checking. A little girl - not me - wrote a poem about Little Lemon in a school magazine in, was it 1957? Russian was taught here for the first time at university level in the 1970s, and as far as I know Croatian still isn't on offer.Barker is funny, actually: you know there's a stock character in soap operas, handsome, filthy rich, e-e-evil but enjoys life and his own villainy enormously and beds every woman in sight? In one of our leading local soaps there is just such a horrible character, and his given name is ... Barker! Like the surname, or the space dog! Barker Hayes. Ask any South African.
