[Opinions] Judith
queenv's post got me thinking on this name. At first I thought it was pretty bland and gross. But it is growing on me. It has a cool ending (I love the "ith") and a nifty namesake. It has an edge to it, a weighty seriousness, and a great hipster tone, especially with the nicknames Judy and Jude. But, does it carry a strong Biblical/Christian/Jewish vibe to it? Too strong for a secular/non-Judeo-Christian child to wear?
combo ideas? I've thought of:
Judith Philomena
Judith Fern (VERY hipster)
Judith Jamesina
Judith Marion
Judith Primrose
Judith Clara

I think Judith is a common enough name for people not to tie it to the Biblical story. I know what you mean about the weightyness of it, but I only like the nickname Jody / Jodie.
Judith Fern is cool, I also like it with Philomena.
Other ideas:
For that hefty but grand tone:
Judith Susanna (both Shakespeare daughters!)
Judith Miranda
Judith Veronica
Judith Edwina
Judith Harriet
Judith Margaret
Judith Rosamund
Judith Alexandra
Judith Louisa
Judith Magdalene / Magdalena
Judith Viola
Judith Beatrix
Judith Eleanor
Judith Charlotte
Judith Seraphine
Judith Laurentia
To bring out Judith's light side:
Judith Marisela
Judith Fay
Judith Lucy
Judith Adele / Judith Adela

Well, I have a Biblical name, so I can't throw stones at Judith. No one ever assumes I'm Jewish because I have a Hebrew name, so I don't see why Judith would be any different.
Overall, I think it's respectable and intelligent, but I would never use it myself. I don't like the NN Judy, and the -ith leaves me cold.

I definitely don't think that it has too strong a Biblical/Christian/Jewish vibe to it. It's just an Old Testament name, like Rachel, Rebecca, and Susannah. People of all types use names like that, and Judith is no different. Heck, my grandson's name is Abraham! Now there's a name that might be argued has a Biblical/Christian/Jewish vibe! And my family is neither Jewish nor Christian! I am an atheist, and my daughter, while not an atheist, does not subscribe to any religious beliefs other than a general belief in a higher power. And I, the atheist, was the one who argued in favor of Abraham, in the face of my son-in-law's initial reluctance. I said that it had "a lot of Old Testament charm." Even though I'm an atheist, I recognize the fact that The Bible has had a great effect on our culture, is part of our common heritage, and has some great names in it.
Okay, back to Judith. I've never thought it was bland, and can agree it has an edge, a weighty seriousness, and a hipster tone. I personally don't like it because I hate the JOOD sound. Simple as that, no more complicated!
