[Opinions] Silpabanleng
is the name of a woman I met today. She is originally from Thailand and goes by Gail. I have no idea where Gail comes from.

I don't recall encountering the name Silpabanleng before. Silvia or Sil would have made more sense than Gail, but I've met other people from other countries who go by English names that don't sound like their actual names. My guess is that she probably just liked Gail.

Yes! I had a Chinese student once whose English teacher in Taiwan had given her the name Susannah to use in English classes. Then she moved to an English environment, didn't like Susannah and asked around until she found a name she did like. Unfortunately it was Ashley ... but she was happy! Her brother became Tim by the same method, but he didn't mind it at all and stayed with it.
