A lot are quite different from the typical American names. I actually knew a Huw (with this spelling), but he was from New Zealand. One of his siblings was named Edwina (pronounced ed-WEEN-a).

*happy sigh* Yes, I love the 'English naming style'. Maybe it's mostly because it's SO different from what we're used to here in the States, but a lot of these names definitely fit into the category of many of my favorite names. :)I like/love*:

I would agree that this is probably not a "random" list from England, but a list drawn primarily from the upper classes. That is shown both by the large percentage of children on this list that have two middle names, and the relative absence of pet forms used as official names like Alfie, Archie, Millie, etc., which are quite popular with the general public in England right now. Some of the names one this list which aren't very popular with the general American public do turn up more often for upper class Americans, too. The main example of that is Henry, which seems to be much more beloved by American parents who are doctors or lawyers than by average Americans at the moment. Jack, Hugo, Madeleine, Eleanor, and Amelia may be other examples.

Yay to the Britons for having a way better and sophisticated taste in naming!Wow, I think many of these names are much more dignified than the names that Americans commonly use. My favourites from this list are:BOYS:Ludovic Oliver John
Montgomery
Nicholas Edmund
Hugo Ignatius Watson
Henry Christopher John
GIRLS:Marina Rose
Ophelia Emily
Elsa Amelia Rose

Nope..for the most part, American's have no taste in names.
Not to insult Americans or anything, but it's true. When every third child's name is misspelled, the world of classy names as we know it has died.I like (or would like to comment on)...
Clemency Rose, a sister for Ashley. -cute, but Ashley's highly boring to go with it.
James
Evelyn
Rex John Charles -Rex? Dinosaur name.
Meredith Beatrice Meissa, a sister for Celeste Evelyn
Lyra -Celeste got the better full name. Meredith is for boys.
Cameron Alexander Campbell -wow..poor kids "croked" all around(see meanings if your confused).
Sophie Clare -would have prefered Claire. I can see this one here.
Camilla Susan, a sister for Rosemary, Philippa and
Eleanor. - I ♥ Camilla and Philippa!! I have them as sibs to Estella, but still, nice to see them together. I like Eleanor too.
Madeleine Eloise Scarlett -cute!
Tiger and Joe -wt-?
twins,Thomas and Olivia -nice to see Thomas on a twin.

I need to move to Britain! I love these names, especially Clemency Rose, absolutely beautiful. Really don't like Huw, though. I would prefer the spelling Hugh. Cosmo is also weird. Love the rest though!

Thank heavensIt is nice to see other names than Madison, McKenzie, Taylor and Tyler.I'm not English but the names look just fine to me. Some are gorgeous, others are boring but classic. The only names which look weird to me are: Clemency, Tiger, Bear, Cosmo, Inigo (a new name to me), Guy, Odhrán (a Celtic name?) and Lettice (makes me think of lettuce)."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

What? You've never seen "Princess Bride?"As in, "My name is Iniqo Mentoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" Mandy Patinkin plays Inigo Mentoya. It's worth seeing at least once, if only for the comedy factor. :oD

No, I have notWhat kind of movie is that?"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

It's a comedy/romance...(m)starring Uma Thurman, Carey Elwes, Andre the Giant, Billy Crystal & Mandy Patinkin, among others. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/ It's based on the book written by William Goldman. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/034543014X/103-3916170-2313466?v=glance&n=283155

To be quite frank, I'm glad that not all babies are named like this. It'd be utterly dull, and a bit pretentious-sounding.Arthur Edward~ Both names are quite nice, but there's too much R.
Clemency Rose~ Clemency is utterly poncy, and I don't like it. Clemence and Clementine are much nicer.
James Beare~ Eh.
Ruby Edith~ I think it's lovely.
Imogen Evelyn~ Too much N! I can't stand Imogen--I much prefer Imogene.
Rex John Charles~ Rex is fun, but John and Charles suck the fun right out of it.
Meredith Beatrice Meissa~ Three middle names annoys me, and I don't like Meredith at all. Beatrice and Celeste are nice.
Cameron Alexander Campbell~ I have a weakness for Cameron, but the rest is eh. And once again, too much R for me.
Saskia Alice Freya~ It's like they took all of snooty British chic and condensed it into one combo. Ugh. I like Alice and Freya, but this all together just makes me cringe.
Sophie Clare~ Boring as sin, but I do love Clare (yay, no I!).
Camilla Susan~Camilla Susan is really nice, though I usually hate Camilla. Susan, Rosemary, Philippa, and Elenor(e) are old favourites of mine.

But Poppy is not a nick namePoppy is a flower name, just like Rose, Lily, Iris, Jasmine etc.Even though Poppy can be used as a nn for other name, I think it is unfair to say it is "just" a nick name."You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

I love those names! They are very much to my taste. It is hard to pick out favourites, but I love Evelyn, Imogen, Emilia, Ophelia, Cordelia and Henry. However they are not the kind of names people had (or gave to their children) in the working class area I grew up in. I'd be interested to know where the announcements are from.

I've heard almost every one of those names used in Canada.

Same here...I can actually think of someone for every single name except Bear, Odhran, Ludo, and Tiger. So not bad. This is in Canada too...__________________________________________________

I can't even imagine most of those names in New Zealand. Is it just me or do they seem very "proper"?
vote up1
They are very proper ... They're definitely English and I'm more used to Scottish announcements, but did those come from the Telegraph by any chance? It's got quite an upper-class readership, and I've noticed the names in their BA's are very ostentatious, far more than the average British child's :-)_____________________________________________________________________Elinor'Why do people with closed minds, always open their mouths?'

Yes i agree they are not normal British names they are very upper class name. Most brits names are not that proper an ostentatious, they do seem to be the sort that would be in the Telegraph
vote up1
Yes! They do seem very proper! Some seem weird though, like Ned and one other one I can't think of. Those seem totally nicknamish to me, not enough of a name to stand alone, and weird because Ned is so unattractive to my ears.
vote up1
When I hear Ned I think of Ned Kelly and when I think of that, I think of Heath Ledger...poor me (not offending anyone who likes him).
