[Opinions] Voltairine
Yo,
I've received mixed opinions on the name Voltairine. I would use it to honour one of my idols, Voltairine de Cleyre, who was herself named after Voltaire. I love it, so feel free to tell your honest opinion of it, but don't expect to talk me out of it :p But it's fine if you hate it.
Anyway I was wondering more about combos. I have always stuck Voltairine in the middle name slot, but suddenly I'm more keen on it in the first name slot. The problem is that it's kind of hard to find a good middle name for her. I came up with Voltairine Beatrice Lucy, which I like quite a bit, but I need more suggestions from skilled combo makers such as yourselves. I like both one and two middle names. I'd prefer names in the same wavelength as Beatrice and Lucy - old-fashioned, established, feminine, shortish names - but by all means, go wild.
Also, if you had a child named Voltairine, would you give her an occasional nickname? And if so, what would it be?

Ahh you're wonderful!
Voltairine Gwyneth Ivy - I looooooove how the V is repeated from beginning to end! And Gwyneth softens the whole thing up!
Voltairine Mercy Lilac - Absolutely gorgeous in every way
Voltairine Sibyl Olivette - Oh this is wonderful. Sibyl is so soft in the middle and Olivette is delicate but still crunchy and it off-sets Sibyl perfectly. What a perfectly balanced combo of delicateness and spunk.
Voltairine Willa Francette - I love the beat of this name and "Willa Francette" is such a southern charm type of combo! Very unexpected with Voltairine, but in the best way!
Thank you!

Once again, thank you! I'm so glad you like some of them. I didn't think they were that great.
*blushes* Thanks New_Chloe and Bear!
Yumpcious combos!
I think the name sounds like someone's trying too hard to look intellectual... either that or like some kind of medicine or laxative or something... and I would never inflict such a name on a child, so there's no "if" I had a child named Voltairine.

You just happened to be reading about her? Is it the anniversary of her birth or something else that I've missed? Otherwise the coincidence it truly freaky.
Fabulous list, by the way.

It was quite strange, actually. While basking in my newfound love for Romaine Brooks and her name, a fondness that was inspired by her Wikipedia article, I recalled Kellie's fondness for Voltairine -- both the name and the namesake -- and proceeded to read about her on Wikipedia. I think I associate Romaine Brooks with Voltairine de Cleyre because they both have unusual names (though the latter's is exceptionally unusual) and they were both strong feminist figures.
i like it! It's different but still has history, which is a good combo. It has such a spirit of freedom and outlandishness.
Loooong names like Voltairine are tough. Hmm, let's see here.

I knew I could count on you!
Voltairine Eliza is ridiculously good!
Voltairine Agatha Pearl - ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh.
Voltairine Olive - Love the repeated letters!
Voltairine Lavender Ada - I love Lavender but I always forget about her. A bit too heavy of a combo for me but it's a great one to dream about ;)
Voltairine Sylvia Hope - Oh man, this is the ULTIMATE girl power name. De Cleyre + Pankhurst + Hope = EXCELLENCE.
Bolt FTW. Wouldn't it be awesome if by some miracle I married Oscar Power and we had a kid named Bolt Power? XD

Wow. Now there's a name to chew on.
I love the sound of it. And the association to Voltaire is definitely a plus. I don't know who Voltairine de Clayre was, but I'm sure she's worthy of the honor. (I lie -- I just did a wikipedia search). It reminds me of Polaire, which I find endlessly elegant and Victorine / Zephyrine who dance in my head.
That said, Voltairine is asking alot to give as someone's actual name. The "i's" in it make my eyes have to refocus. It's not that easy to look at, visually.
But I'm nothing if not an addict to a name challenge. So here goes:
Voltairine Mary Clare (for Ms Wollestonecraft and Mr. Darrow) -- simple, but it rings true
Voltairine Harriet Eugenia (for son Harry and Mr. Debs)
Voltairine Philadelphia Thoreau (you said go wild)
Voltairine Mary Thomasine / Tamsin (it rhymes, but honors Ms Wollestonecraft and Mr. Paine)
Less honoring, but equally fetching (I hope):
Voltairine Lucy Matilda
Voltairine Mary Adele
Voltairine Sylvie Aurora
Voltairine Nora Abigail
Voltairine Emma Beatrice (gets Ms Goldman in there)
Voltairine Annabel Sophie
Voltairine Zelda Marion
Voltairine Silvestra Pax
Voltairine Ramona Lucy
Voltairine Georgia Emily (I think she would have liked Ms Dickinson)

Voltairine Philadelphia Thoreau is positively swoonworthy. These are amazing suggestions!
I'd like to participate, but sorry, Kellie, I'm not up to the challenge right now. Did not get enough sleep last night! Maybe I'll try later after a nap. :)

Wow wow wow Voltairine Philadelphia Thoreau. I might use that as a chaacter.
Wow a lot of these are really good. Sometimes you just have to skim. Voltairine Clio Isidora SO GOOD.

Skimming is fun too. It's like window shopping, only with name lists, right?
Wow!
Excellent! Thanks not only for the feedback (I always enjoy the names you bring up, btw) but also for the dedication to finding other honourary names along the same line! I'm always happy to introduce Voltairine to someone new :-)
I like-
Voltairine Mary - I cut the Claire out since I thought it was too much "air" sound, but this is very pretty and makes for great balance of wacky and stable.
Voltairine Philadelphia Thoreau - This is way too wild to realistically use, but I have to list it just because Thoreau would make such a badass middle name ;)
Voltairine Mary Tamsin
Voltairine Mary Adele - Soooo pretty. I love Mary Adele together. My usual combo is Jonquil Mary Adele, but this is just as intoxicating.
Voltairine Sylvie - Reminds me of Sylvia Pankhurst, which is stellar
Voltairine Emma Beatrice - WOOO. So much excellence! Love that you got Goldman in!
Voltairine Silvestra Pax - Again a little too hot to handle, but just beaming with beauty and badassery nonetheless
Voltairine Ramona Lucy - Excellent and very spunky
Voltairine Sibyl Minerva
Voltairine Louisa Beatrix
Voltairine Winifred Alice - I'm not a Winifred fan but she sounds wonderful in this combo. Or even just Voltairine Alice would be lovely, I think.
I realise Voltairine is a lot of name to handle, but I figure if Miss de Cleyre can do it, I'm good ;-)
Thanks again for the fabulous suggestions!

Yay. Glad you liked them.
And you beat me to the Pankhurst punch. I was thinking last night after I logged off that Voltairine Sylvia Christabel would make a spirited combo.

I love Voltaire, but this name is a bit of a mouthful and is too weird even for me. It looks and sounds a bit like Wolverine, and seems like a character in a fantasy story. If I had a child named Voltairine, I'd call her Rina for short.
When I first saw that name, it took me almost 3 readings to soak it in. Nothing's wrong with it, and it's actually really pretty. It's just really overwhelming.
If I had a child named that, the nickname might be Terry. :/ I don't really like the nickname, but I can't get anything else. Maybe no nickname, then.
