is the name of a 2 year old girl I met today. She's the first Dinah I've ever met. I like it. :)

It's too close to "diner", for my liking. Diana, is so much prettier.

I like Dinah (DIE-nuh). The only problem being that it sounds the same as 'diner' in English, not a big problem though.

It's my cat's name! She's sleek and petite and pitch black, and when we got her (rescued from being abused in a park) we had two old tabby sisters called Katie and Alice. I thought that since Alice in Wonderland had a Dinah cat, it would be appropriate.
I also had a great-great aunt Dinah, but she wasn't a factor in the decision. And I knew an Englishwoman once who went by Dee but was in fact a Dinah. She changed from being Di to being Dee after reading Kafka!

I've liked Dinah for awhile
Every time I bring it up, I get negative remarks. People either cite the song ("Dinah blow your horn") or they think it sounds like a cat (a la Alice in Wonderland). I think it has a classic Regency era sound to it. I love it. That is, the Die-nah pronunciation. I hate Dee-nuh.

That it would be awesome to have your name in a folksong! Nothing wrong with workin' on the railroad all the live-long day. And what's wrong with Alice's cat, either?
This reminds me of how my husband thinks it's a bad thing that you can associate Peter with Peter Pan, Peter Rabbit, and Peter and the Wolf. But to me, those are all major positives!

Hear, hear! My son loved Peter and the Wolf, and his little sister was eager to eat pita bread because she associated it with him.

Yeah, I think a kid (or an adult for that matter) would think that it's cool to have a song about them, or fun characters who share their name, like the Peters you mentioned.

oh boy I totally gave it the bad remarks you said! I can not see it used here in the US maybe in other countries but I sadly agree with the Dinah wontcha blow your horn and Alice in Wonderlands cat! And as my mom would say it has the sound Die in it, you dont name your child die. I dont follow my mom though she hated Kill -ian but alas he is my Killy Killy Kian!
