The former emperor’s children were sickly from birth, and the epidemic that swept through Prylyn carried all of them off despite the royal doctors’ best efforts. The emperor himself had perished in battle several years ago, and the empress had been ruling alone for years. When her children took ill, she could not be removed from their bedsides, in spite of all the doctors’ warnings. As expected, she too took ill. Beaten down by the loss of her entire family, she didn’t even fight, and lasted little more than a week.
The empire was in shock. The empress’s eldest nephew, Theobald, was still dazed and grief-stricken when he received the news that he was now the emperor and must find a wife. He settled upon the eldest daughter of the Archduke Nikolaus: Fidelia, a girl six years his junior, who had known Theobald for several years.
