Elias was the 8th born child to a very poor family living in rural Portugal, an uncle offered to take care of him when he was 3 and took him to Lisbon. His uncle used Elias to assist in burglaries, his slight figure was useful for gaining entry. Fortunately they were caught, his uncle went to prison and Elias placed in an orphanage because his parents could not afford to have him back.
